URWERK once again challenges the conventions of avant-garde watchmaking with the introduction of the URWERK UR-150 Golden Scorpion. Conceived as a kinetic sculpture where light alters the visual perception of the case, this new iteration houses the maison’s signature orbital architecture within 18K (2N) yellow gold. Limited to a strict production run of 25 numbered pieces, the timepiece combines a radical aesthetic presence with the manufacture automatic calibre UR-50.01.
Kinetic Sculpture in 2N Yellow Gold
Measuring 42.50 mm in width, 51.00 mm in length, and 14.80 mm in overall thickness, the case of the UR-150 Golden Scorpion moves beyond purely utilitarian aesthetics into high-precious finishing. The main case body is crafted in 2N yellow gold featuring sandblasted, shot-blasted, and satin-finished surface treatments. This precious framework is paired with a grade 5 titanium case back with black PVD treatment, ensuring ergonomic comfort on the wrist and water resistance rated to 5 ATM.
Designed by Martin Frei, the geometry harnesses the optical properties of yellow gold to redefine the case contours depending on light reflections. The 2N yellow gold crown seamlessly integrates at the 12 o’clock position, while the curved sapphire crystal protects the dynamic orbital display inside.
Satellite Hours and 240-Degree Retrograde Minute
Time display is driven by URWERK’s signature Satellite complication. Three aluminum satellite hour modules rotate atop a central brass flying carousel finished with 3N gold PVD coating. An aluminum retrograde minute hand sweeps across a 240-degree sector before snapping back to zero in one-hundredth of a second.
To deliver optimal nighttime legibility, the hour numerals, minute track, carousel accenting, and counterweight are hand-painted with Super-LumiNova.
Manufacture Calibre UR-50.01: Twin-Turbine Regulation
Powering the timepiece is the in-house self-winding Calibre UR-50.01. Regulated by a dual-turbine system, the movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz), incorporates 38 jewels, and provides a power reserve of 43 hours. Rather than utilizing a traditional Geneva cross, the architecture employs a rack-and-cam system coupled with a speed governor inherited from minute repeater mechanisms to control the swift flyback of the minute hand.
Movement execution includes LIGA-fabricated wheels, grade 5 titanium screws with flat-polished heads, and a brass winding rotor finished with 3N gold PVD, circular graining, and sandblasting.
